Posted by Tia on Thursday Mar 12, 2009

Touchscreen phones are really hot right now, but their presence is still significantly weaker in the budget end of the market. That’s why Samsung has decided to fill the gap with its upcoming budget touch phones, the S5600, which we have already informed you of, and the S5230.

The S5600 is designed to suit the needs of the users who seek not only high functionality but also more stylish appearance. It sports 2.8-inch touch-sensitive display with QVGA resolution and the TouchWiz interface with widgets, allowing for fast one-click access to your favorite apps. A key feature of the device would be Gesture Lock . It lets the user to unlock and execute a certain menu by drawing a letter on the screen. In addition, it is up to the users to decide which submenu to correspond to a certain letter (from A to Z). Promoted as a multimedia phone, the S5600 offers also a 3-megapixel camera with up-to-date features like Smile Shot. Video recording will be available with up to QVGA resolution at 15 frames per second. The Samsung S5600 is a quad-band GSM and a dual-band 3G device that should hit the European stores in May, but still not a word on pricing or U.S. availability.
The second addition to the mid-end touch screen line is the S5230. It is a slim and compact device incorporating a large 3.0-inch WQVGA screen, again running the TouchWiz UI plus Mobile Widgets and Photo Contacts, allowing you to call a certain contact only by touching an image. The Gesture Lock feature will be also present here, along with an on-screen QWERTY keyboard for faster messaging. S5230’s camera will not offer something different – 3-megapixels with video recording in QVGA resolution at 15 fps. This quad-band GSM will be available across French and other European markets, starting April with no official price confirmed yet.

Nokia officially announces three new music phones

Posted by Tia on Thursday Mar 12, 2009

The manufacturer has officially announced the newest additions to its multimedia series: the 5730 XpressMusic, the 5330 XpressMusic and the 5030.

First of all, the new S60 multimedia powerhouse, the 5730 XpressMusic, seems to have leaned to the social networking trend that’s been hot for a long while now. It comes with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard (similarly to the E75) in order to deliver fast and handy non-voice communication experience. Speaking of social networking, the new phone will come preloaded with Facebook, Ovi Contacts, Ovi Photos, Ovi Maps and messaging applications. In contrast to what you may have thought, the 5730 XpressMusic will not be just about socializing, it is also promoted as a gaming device, for it is fully N-Gage enabled and features gaming-dedicated keys. The handset is equipped with a 2.4-inch screen running in QVGA resolution and a 3.5mm jack. Addition extras also include a 3.2-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera and A-GPS. Its music features include a direct access to Nokia Music Store, “Say and Play” music control and music-dedicated keys.

The 5730 XpressMusic is a quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G device, scheduled for the third quarter of the year at a price of about $354 (280 Euro), but there’s still no information about a North American release.

Next on, we have the 5330 XpressMusic. The mid-level slider sports fancy touch-sensitive music-dedicated leys, along with light effects, which can be easily personalized. It will also deliver social-centric features, such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Ovi Contacts, Nokia Messaging etc… Again, users will have the opportunity to look at a 2.4-inch QVGA display and use the Series 40 interface in order to manage their device, which will also feature Nokia Maps with A-GPS and a 3.2-megapixel camera.

Being a quad-band GSM and a tri-band 3G, the 5330 XpressMusic will be available in two versions: one for Europe (interestingly, this one features also the 1700MHz band, but it is currently unknown if it would be capable of using T-Mobile USA’s 3G network), and another for North America. Expect it to hit stores in Q3 2009 for about $202 (160 Euro)

Finally, Nokia has prepared the 5030. This is the first Nokia phone to include a built-in radio antenna, which will allow consumers to listen to their favorite radio stations without having the need to plug in headphones. The main feature of this device has even expired Nokia to start a brand new line of phones – XpressRadio, the first of which will be the 5030. The manufacturer has also informed of its plans to later add more devices to the series. But let’s stick to the 5030. The handset will offer features, typical for a low-end device, like a 1.8-inch display with a resolution of 128×160 pixels, Series 40 interface and a flashlight. What’s interesting about it however, is its powerful speaker, which is said to deliver up to 24 hours of FM radio playback time.

The Nokia 5030 is a quad-band GSM, which will be on sale for about $50 (40 Euro) without taxes and subsidies. Sadly, Nokia is not planning to release it in the U.S. for now.

Nokia music store takes virtual stage in India by May

Posted by Tia on Tuesday Feb 24, 2009

nokia_music_store_3638In the backdrop of slump in sales in physical format music in India, Finnish mobile handset maker Nokia will roll out virtual music store, specific to India by May. People would be able to access and download music on their mobile phones and PCs. The mobile handset major plans to start this venture on a revenue-sharing basis with music content providers.

A FICCI-KPMG study on the media and entertainment sector stated that the size of the Indian music industry has shrunk from Rs 830 crore in 2005 to about Rs 730 crore in 2008 due to ‘erosion of sales of physical formats, a trend which is expected to continue well into the future.’ The report further stated the industry will have to bank on revenues from digital distribution, broadcast, and public performance licensing to compensate for declining physical sales but also drive growth going forward.

The study states that Indian digital music market which was an estimated Rs 180 crore market in 2008 is expected to grow faster with the roll out of high speed 3G data services. “We are in talks with major music title holders in India. We also have plans to provide other content including video that can be downloaded from the site,” said Vineet Taneja, head of marketing for Nokia India Pvt Ltd., a Nokia subsidiary in India. Neither could Taneja immediately share names of specific music label firms he is in discussion with nor did he provide the revenue sharing details. The company is also talking to other content providers for movies like US-based Fox Entertainment and some sports content providers as well.

It is learnt that Nokia will launch the service in India, initially with a free one-year subscription on purchase of select Nokia handsets. In September, Nokia launched a similar service in UK for the first time on its 5310XpressMusic device. The service allows users to download and store unlimited songs and even after the subscription expires.

Nokia’s competitor Motorola already has a similar service for India, Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asian region through its acquisition of Singapore based online music distributor Soundbuzz in January 2008.

One Feature That Would Have Made The E71 Perfect

Posted by Tia on Tuesday Feb 24, 2009

E71I have been almost exclusively using the Nokia E71 since October and I probably said it a hundred times already and bored you, but I love it, love it, love it. Just now I feel the need to format it, after 4 months of incredibly heavy usage and extremely heavy installation of any alpha or beta or finished application that I stumble upon. Normally, any other device in my hands doesn’t last more than a month without starting to go crazy and needing to be formatter. But there is ONE feature that matters in my opinion and that would have made the E71 the perfect mobile companion:

An Accelerometer

There is no need to rotate the E71’s screen, but accelerometers aren’t just about that. There are other applications and games that I really miss on the E71:

* I’ve been a big ShakeSMS addict on my N82, and it became part of my subconscious to shake my phone whenever a new SMS arrives. It wasn’t easy to go back to the ordinary Unlock/Open SMS/Lock method on the E71.
* Step Counter is another application that I thoroughly enjoy using whenever I exercise. It helps me keep track of my improvements, gives me a real pedometer alternative and a reason to encourage myself to perform better each time. It doesn’t work on the E71.
* FlipSilent is one more proof of how my whole alarm-silencing/morning-waking was dependent on my mobile. The E71 doesn’t allow me to silence an alarm by flipping it, so I have to look for the small key that does it when I have my eyelids still glued together each morning.
* Then there’s of course the awesome accelerometer-based games like Marble Maze and Resco Bubbles that are a no-go on the E71. I thoroughly enjoy them on the N82, but can’t unfortunately play them on the E71.

Of course, I wish the E71 had N-Gage support and I wish it had a more decent imaging experience, maybe I also wish it was an FP2 device, but these issues *could* eventually be fixed with a firmware update, whereas the lack of an accelerometer is a hardware problem that no firmware would be able to solve.

Nokia’s Ideas Project Is Giving Away N95s

Posted by Tia on Tuesday Feb 24, 2009

We somehow missed letting you know about the launch of Nokia’s Ideas Project website, in January, but it’s better late than never, right? Nokia’s Ideas Project website wants to hear your ideas – regardless of what they may be, if you have an idea, they want it. Once you’ve submitted it, Nokia has pooled together some big names to act as Experts. These names include Loic Le Mur, Chris Anderson, Ari Jaaski, and more. These Experts will chime in on your idea with thoughts and answers, if possible, to your ideas. It’s really quite a neat idea, and you can check out the list of already-submitted ideas here.

To help encourage more ideas, the Ideas Project is giving away a Nokia N95 (no word on which of the 4 variants it is) each week to the ‘Editors Choice’ idea. There’s no limit on how many times you can enter, so if your head is just about to explode with great ideas, now’s the time to cash in on your headache. You can submit your idea to the site here.

More Details On Nseries Skype Integration

Posted by Tia on Saturday Feb 21, 2009

Following up on the news from earlier today that Nokia and Skype will be integrating the Skype service into Nokia’s Nseries smartphones, I have a picture that I found on the Skype blog, courtesy of TechCraver.com. While the Nokia press release made it sound like the S60 contacts app was going to get a web-enabled overhaul, to integrate Skype, it seems that’s not entirely accurateYou can see in the screenshot that the Skype integration will merely be implemented in the form of yet another tab in the contacts application, similar to how Contacts on Ovi, Nokia Conversations, and Gizmo Project currently do. It’s possible that this setup will, indeed, allow me to click on a contact and be shown their presence on Skype, but more than likely, it will simply be another pane, with a separate buddy list.

What’s bothersome about this, to me, is that the press release makes it clear that the Skype integration will only be available via firmware update. As owners of the N95-3 and N95 8GB NAM are fully aware, that leaves them entirely up to Nokia as to which phones will be able to experience this connected goodness, and which ones will not. I’m curious, if Nokia is able to distribute common .sis files for these other contacts tab plugins, why is Skype any different?
